Light

Opening (adapted from "The Wiccan Path: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner," by Rae Beth):

On the longest night, all nature sleeps. Coldness and stillness like death grip the earth. There is a reign of darkness. There is a pause, a hovering between life and death, a suspension. But the world is ever dreamt awake, year by year. Silver vision be granted to us, in this darkness. We share in the work of Mother Goddess and dream the future into being. Let us cast our circle.

Casting of the Circle:

(Women representing each of the directions say the following as they light that direction's candle on the altar.)

North: Goddess of earth, bring a sense of the everlasting mystery to our circle.
East: Goddess of air, bring mindfulness to our circle.
South: Goddess of fire, bring strength to our circle.
West: Goddess of water, bring compassion to our circle.

Rest and Reflection:

(Accompaniment by the Roches' "Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light" and Cat Stevens' "Morning Has Broken.")

Discussion:

Many celebrations from many cultures take place this time of year -- Santa Lucia's Day, Advent, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Hanukkah, Yule, Christmas, Kwanzaa. All invoke the Light and celebrate a miracle, a birth or a return. Share the light in your life, the spark that sustains you through darkness and coldness, or tell what you are awaiting.

Blessing (all go to the altar):

(Pass your hands over the candles, then over yourself, saying:)

I share in the renewal of all life.
With all beings, I am cherished by the Creator.
May I grow in _____________.
I am reborn in strength.
I am nourished in light.

Sharing Sustenance:

(Accompaniment by the Roches' "O Little Town of Bethlehem.")

Closing of the Circle:

(The women who opened the circle take up their candles and circle the table three times, then carry the light into our dining area to illuminate our meal.)

Sign of peace
